SSD & SSI Myths

Some Common Misconceptions About Social Security

It is very important when you are planning to file a claim with the Social Security administration that you clear away a lot of the misinformation that surrounds the filing process. A knowledgeable SSD lawyer in Sacramento from our office can answer all of your questions regarding this.

We outline some common myths that often come up about SSD(Social Security Disability) and SSI(Supplemental Security Income) below:

  • One common myth is that you cannot earn money while receiving Social Security Disability benefits. In actuality, you could earn up to $1,000 per month in 2011 while getting benefits (amount is subject to change).
  • Another common myth is that you will get denied if you are working part time. We at Disability Action Advocates have helped many people who were working part time get benefits. After all, it is your inability to work full time that is the determining factor for qualification.
  • Some people think that they should keep filing new claims after they have been denied and that this will eventually get them approved but this is another myth. In doing this, they are really just making the same mistakes over again. You have 60 days to file an appeal and, if this is done properly, will give you a much better chance at getting approved.
  • Another prevalent myth is that you cannot get benefits if you have never worked. This is not true. When you file a claim for SSI, this is a needs based program and so it is not connected to your work history.

This is where we can really make a difference for you in getting approved. We work with you from the initial filing to make sure that everything is in order and follow through until we get results. If needed, we will take your case to an Administrative Law Judge hearing.
