Do you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits but wish to return to work? Many people are hesitant to return to work out of fear that their SSDI payments will cease. The Trial Work Period (TWP)
The Social Security Administration (SSA) actually encourages people to go back to work by providing certain incentives such as continued Medicare or Medicaid benefits, continued cash benefits for a limited time, and assistance with education or training to start a new line of work. If you wish to return to work, you will be allowed to receive your benefits for up to 9 non-consecutive working months over a period of five years. This is known as a Trial Work Period (TWP), with any month where you make more than $810 counting as a working month. During the TWP, you can make as much as you want without any sort of penalty to your benefits.
Working After the TWP Expires
Once this period expires, you may continue to work and receive your benefits during a 36-month Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE) as long as you do not earn more than an amount that the SSA considers to be "substantial gainful activity," or the SAG threshold. In 2016, this threshold is $1,130 per month for non-blind workers and $1,820 for blind benefit recipients. If you earn more than this amount during the EPE, your benefits will cease unless your income drops below the threshold or if you stop working. If your income exceeds this threshold after the EPE has expired, you will lose their benefits entirely.
